Description

"The Art of Graeme Base" showcases the incredible talents of this much-loved writer and illustrator, those books Abrams has been publishing since 1985. Beginning with Base's own storybook childhood in England, we see how his imagination and artistic talents were fed by his family's love of music, literature and nature and how his talent was further enriched by travel, teachers, friends and his wife and their three children. From Base's earliest drawings, pop-up cards and homemade board games, through his years as a teenager and rock musician and through a quarter-century of published books, we learn about the artists, musicians, writers and humorists who inspired him, and witness the development of his own particular brand of genius.

Author description

Julie Watts worked for eighteen years as a publisher of books for children and young adults at Penguin Books Australia, collaborating with many celebrated authors and illustrators, including Graeme Base. Graeme Base was born in 1958 in England, but moved with his family to Australia at the age of 8. After earning an art degree in graphic design, he worked in advertising for a couple of years and then began illustrating children's books, gradually moving to authoring them as well. He is perhaps best known for his second book, Animalia, which was published in 1986 and has gone on to sell almost 1.5 million copies worldwide. He resides in Melbourne with his wife Robyn and their three children.
