Merlot has long been a staple variety in the vineyards of Bordeaux, used in blends with Cabernet Sauvignon to add soft, supple fruit to the final wine. More recently, it has made a name for itself as the predominant variety in the "garagiste" wines of Pomerol and St-Emilion in Bordeaux.

Author description

Susy Atkins is the wine columnist for Eve and is consultant editor of the award winning Which? Wine Guide.
